イル・ド・ラ・シテ（町の島）はパリ発祥の地で、俗に「パリの目」とも呼ばれるが、文化史的に見ると、それは同時に「フランスの目」でもあった。その位置をパリの地図についていうと、セーヌ河が右下（南東）から中央に山形を描いて左下（南西）の方へ流れている。その山形の右寄りの肩のあたりで、セーヌは幅広くなって、二つの島を浮かべている。右がイル・サン・ルイ（聖ルイ島〉で、左がイル・ド・ラ・シテである。
